it’s day 777 of my saturn return and the only reason i’m posting something on today, after taking a hiatus, is so that, hopefully, i can look back from a year’s time and feel grateful about finally moving forward…
As we embark on the nearing of spring, the season of rebirth, I wanted to share some updates with my Bojepsÿ community:
In 2023, I began to give birth to a universe in which I had no intention in creating. For a while I dismissed it and, more or less, it drove me into a spell of madness. I ignored the pangs by focusing on dietetics and food; I did almost everything I could to avoid bringing this creation into reality.
The characters came so naturally, so vividly, that it began to haunt me. There exists fragments, vignettes, of this universe which I have to responsibly bring forth, but it is contentious; an old tale from an old world.
As an aspiring historian, I often think about the juxtaposition of narrative, and whose story ultimately gets told and by whom, and to serve what purpose. I rest in the fact that to merely give recognition to something has wide and far-reaching implications, especially in these times where the politics of visuals and who is allowed to be seen are so, so evident.
By the grace of Allah (SWT), I was able to travel to faraway places very young. I was able to experience mysticism and the unknown with rose-tinted glasses, and from the vantage of someone existing in the impressionable state of youth, and for that I am quite thankful. From the dunes of the Sahara to the ivory towers of Western Europe, truly, I am thankful.
This universe which began to take form inside of me is an ode to the lost narratives of time. We forget how old this world is, and that nothing under the sun is new. Alas, again, as an aspiring historian, I exist in constant pursuit of what was lost, especially during this critical epoch we find ourselves in, together.
My sources of inspiration continue to be language, music and beauty, the latter because I believe beauty is the last and only honest thing we have. These characters and their individual stories are diverse, rich, and complex, yet, together, they construct a world where time is repurposed to serve the present-day.
In each of them I find myself, and not in a way that is vain. They possess a vitality and passion for life, and are bound together by their unyielding respect and love for one another, despite intra and extra-familial complexities.
anyways, I’m hoping to share more in due time…but, in the interim, I will continue sharing recipes and musings on food, beauty rituals and practices, and mental health.
love & madness,
